LocalGov Drupal (LGD) Camp 2025: a celebration of collaboration, innovation and community

On 3 July 2025, digital teams from councils across the UK, including Luton, gathered for LGD Camp 2025 - a vibrant, community-driven event, designed to foster learning, networking, and shared innovation.

What is LGD Camp?
LGD Camp is more than just a conference. It’s a celebration of the open-source spirit that powers LGD. With themes spanning accessibility, content design, tech and product, and community building, the day was packed with workshops, show-and-tell sessions, and tailored discussions.

Funded by subscription fees and managed by the Open Digital Cooperative, LGD Camp brings together councils, suppliers and the core LGD team to strengthen the digital public sector arena.

LGD by numbers
– 57 councils using LGD
– 59 live sites and 50+ microsites
– 53 paying subscribers
– 1,082 code contributions
– 800 Slack members
– 290 community meetups in 2024/25

Highlights from the day
Sessions covered everything from AI-powered LGD and analytics-driven content migration to writing for accessibility and developing intranets as a product. Essex Council shared their experience of centralising LGD delivery, while Greenwich showcased how LGD improves resident transactions.

One standout session, ‘So, you think it’s accessible?’, challenged common myths and inspired attendees to think beyond checklists. Another, ‘Content, content everywhere’ offered practical tips for populating new LGD sites.

Personal reflections
The energy was high. The collaborations were inspiring. Meeting long-time Slack contacts in-person added a new dimension to the community. The free food was great, the sessions were insightful, and the LGD stickers? Iconic 😊

I left camp with:
– a deeper understanding of LGD’s history, community fund and product roadmap
– new connections
– renewed excitement for our own LGD project

LGD’s evolution
From its 2018 beginnings in Brighton & Hove to Luton Council joining this elite collective in 2025, LGD has grown into a thriving ecosystem of developers, designers, and digital leaders. Councils share code, expertise, and resources to solve common challenges together.

Partners and suppliers
LGD’s success is built on collaboration with its partners – the 9 councils that were there for the beta phase of LGD – and suppliers like Agile Collective, Annertech, GAIN, and many more. Collectively, these collaborators bring a wealth of expertise in Drupal, accessibility, and user-centred design.

LGD values
Open culture
– Diversity of voices
– Community support
– Trust and transparency
– Inclusive decision-making

What’s next for Luton?
Luton’s LGD landing page is already live in demo form. It’s a very preliminary design (see below) and will likely go through several different versions before we have a completed new website.

With enhanced content layouts and features like a prominent search bar and seasonal/event-based imagery, our new LGD website is shaping up to be a user-friendly, accessible platform… not to mention pretty! 😉 Watch this space!
