From Strategy to Strolls: A Few Weeks of Progress and Pause

The last few weeks have offered a rare and welcome blend of momentum and mindfulness. On the work front, it was a pivotal moment for our Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) function and the wider Council. We held our Senior Management Team (SMT) away day—an energising session facilitated by some amazing colleagues from our OD Team (Ailsa White) as well as the lovely Jo Cumper, and Kiri Crequer from North Northamptonshire Council.

We started they day with me setting out my vision for the type of service I want us to be – centred around 3 mantras: ‘Getting thigs done’, ‘Dynamic’ and ‘People Centred’. We then had a look at what that means in terms of shifting from a traditional IT service model to a modern digital service, and how this drives our new Strategic Framework, which in turns drives Luton 2040. For the afternoon, we looked at personality types, management styles and personal development plans to help us get there as a team.

One of the standout achievements in the last few weeks was securing approval for our new strategic framework and governance model. This marks a significant step forward in aligning our digital ambitions with the Council’s broader priorities. The framework, shaped through collaboration and challenge, is now the backbone of how we’ll deliver impact—anchored in transparency, agility, and accountability. We’re also making good progress on the TOM work to make sure we have the culture and capability to deliver this.

Another exciting session was engaging the Strategic Management Leadership Group (SMLG) in shaping digital operating models that can help us tackle our three biggest priorities: jobs, safety, and housing. These conversations are already surfacing bold ideas and practical pathways for change, and it’s heartening to see digital being positioned not just as a service enabler, but as a strategic lever for transformation.

And then – Prague.

After a week of strategic intensity, I had the chance to step away and spend time in one of Europe’s most enchanting cities with the family. Prague’s cobbled streets, gothic spires, and riverside cafés offered the perfect counterbalance to the pace of change back home. It was a reminder that reflection is as vital as action, and that sometimes the best ideas come when you’re not chasing them. (A bit of nostalgia also kicked in as I discovered they still have a C&A – with the same logo – that I shopped in for much of my youth).

I’m excited, re-energised and reinvigorated for the next few months. As 1 year of me being in the role seems to be creeping up on me (in November), it’s a poignant reminder to check if I’ve achieved what I intended to, and what next!
