Last Sunday, I had the honour of being invited to Luton’s first AI hackathon, hosted by Momentum and Femetronics.
Momentum is a community-driven initiative that brings together successful professionals, entrepreneurs, and changemakers to reinvest their skills, networks and expertise into their local communities.
Femetronics is a non-profit organisation that empowers, educates and elevates women in engineering. They support those aged 16 and above who are ready to grow, lead, and thrive in the world of STEM.
Two days, three solutions and a group of inspiring teenagers
The hackathon consisted of a group of around 50 Luton teenagers, who spent two days using AI to develop solutions, a business strategy and a presentation to one of three problems.
- How can we make AI more sustainable in terms of energy?
- How can we use advancements in tech to improve the healthcare industry?
- In the era of AI and automation, how can we create more fulfilling career opportunities in Luton?
The presentations were all brilliant! I was highly impressed with how the group used lived experience to:
- come up with innovative, yet well thought through, ideas
- develop the products
Big ideas!
These are the impressive solutions the group innovated.
- Reusing heat generated by datacentres to provide lower cost power to local residents, improving the carbon footprint and tackling the cost of living challenge in one.
- NHS aligned chatbots, who can triage medical queries and raise requests for prescriptions, appointments or referrals.
- A jobs and skills website that helps young people:
- understand the skills they already have, what skills they might need to develop and how to do this
- support in building a CV and be able to do it all in another language if needed
I’m equally proud of meeting Ibraheem, Zara and Manha, who organised this event. They are local young people who want to provide a network, opportunities and inspiration for Luton youngsters.
They are turning their belief that Luton has so much potential into action!
