Introducing James Bovington – Service Manager, Principal Developer

Another new recruit to DDaT - James Bovington is our new Principal Developer. On top of the usual first week admin, James has been making plans. And lucid diagrams!

Hi everyone,

I’m James Bovington and I’ve just finished my first week as Principal Developer for Luton Council’s Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) service

Like most first weeks in local government, it’s been a mix of

  • getting set up
  • mandatory training
  • trying to understand how everything fits together

A good part of my time has been the usual onboarding activities, but I’ve also been finding out more about the DDaT strategy and meeting the team.

Making plans

Most of my time so far has been spent on the planning side of things, while the procurement of the low code platform is being finalised. That’s included:

  • sketching out architecture diagrams
  • thinking about implementation approaches
  • considering how we can set up delivery and development practices that will work well for the team

Part of my planning process is using lucid diagrams that allow us to:

  • visually collaborate on drawing, revising and sharing charts and graphics
  • model data, processes and systems

Putting lessons learned into practice

I’ve worked in local government technology for about 18 years now, including around 10 years with the technologies we’re planning to use here.

This week has also been a chance to reflect on some lessons learned from previous roles at other councils. Every organisation is different, but there are always useful things you can bring forward.

Overall, it’s been a good first week. I’m looking forward to:

  • getting stuck into the initial platform building once all is ready
  • seeing what we can develop together as a team
